Our Campus

The LIS campus is based in Whitechapel (just off Brick Lane) in east London.

The building itself has a long history of philanthropy, community, and social action. It was the location for the original Salvation Army Mission Hall which supplied food to the local area and later became the Salvation HQ. The building has since been expertly transformed into a flexible working space, which LIS shares with other purpose-driven organisations.

LIS students benefit from events, seminars, and workshops organised by members of the wider co-working environment. Some of these businesses also offer internships to LIS students during their degree.

Design and facilities on campus

Our campus is home to a range of teaching, learning, and communal spaces and has been designed to facilitate collaboration and learning. Teaching happens in the round rather than traditional front-facing classrooms. We have a number of specialist spaces (e.g. the media studio) as well as areas where students learn in small groups, or even as an entire cohort.

The design process has been exciting. And it’s something that will continue into our first years. The building itself is deliberately adaptable — we want to work with students to create an environment that works for them. This is particularly true of our common area, where students are invited to take an active role in the evolution of the space.

When choosing materials, we consider several factors pertinent to sustainability and the circular economy. These include whether the material can be recycled or reshaped, and a material’s overall life cycle.

Our campus is spread across four floors available exclusively to LIS, featuring:

  • Classrooms, meeting rooms, quiet areas, and common spaces
  • Purpose-built media and design rooms
  • Printing services
  • Access to a landscaped courtyard and multiple event spaces
  • Secure bike store
