Interview Questions

What motivated you to pursue the MASc degree at LIS?

After my undergraduate degree, I felt like I hadn’t developed the skills to tackle the world’s problems, only that I knew more about them. I wanted to come to LIS for this reason as I felt there was a gap in my applied skills. The degree seemed like it would allow me to put my theory and knowledge from other areas into practice, and do so in a way that would open doors.

In what ways did your experience at LIS differ from traditional higher education programmes? What aspects stood out to you the most?

I had never met such a diverse group of people until I can to LIS. As one of the younger members of the cohort, it was so beneficial to be surrounded by people from all walks of life. It opened by eyes to different career paths and ways of doing things which has allowed me to think and explore less traditional paths.

Can you briefly describe your capstone project? What inspired your research, and what were the key findings?

My capstone looked at the effects of polycrisis on young people’s ability to image social futures. I was inspired by the recent decline in young people’s engagement with traditional politics and wanted to understand why that was the case. Through the research, I found that young people are using dystopian fiction tropes as a sense making tool to image social futures, but overwhelmingly find it difficult to image a future that is not dystopian.
