Systems Thinking for Sustainability

Systems Thinking Explained: How to Think like a Polymath

What is systems thinking? Where did it come from? Why so late an intellectual development? How could it be that humans only grasped the simple idea of 'negative feedback' decades after identifying quantum mechanics?

In this webinar, Duncan Austin will introduce the key elements of systems thinking and reflect on how polymaths through the ages may have been intuitive 'systems thinkers' before the term was coined, and hence how explicit understanding of systems thinking today offers a fast track to polymathism for anyone.

To illustrate, we will explore how systems thinking has the power to render the so-called "Jevons Paradox" of energy and resource efficiency into a "Jevons Common Sense" that might lead us to more sustainable ways of living.
