Encirclopedia is a remarkable exploration of circles and circularity. Using hundreds of luscious high-resolution photographs, David Williams takes us to visit supernovas and seedheads, pizza and planets, peeling paint on postboxes and computer-generated models of foams. In a hermeneutic circle outside this frame of reference is a discursion on cognition, embodiment and embodiment; the artist open our eyes to simplicity, complexity, interdisciplinarity, emergence and convergence across multiple orders of magnitude. More than this, the location-specific installation is a visual knockout. Come along and be stunned.
From the artist’s introduction: “Circles are everywhere and endless. We are surrounded by circles. Encirclopedia is a visual exploration of them. What are they? Are there different types? What are the borderline cases of something that is circular and something that is not? How, why, and in what ways can it be said that circles have meaning? How have different disciplines understood and used circles to express and tell narratives about different aspects of reality? What are the connections, if any, between them? What do you see and think? How do you feel? What connections do you make? Come in and look round…".

David Williams was an LIS student last year on the MASc in Interdisciplinary Problems and Methods. In his working life before he retired he ran a business, The Running Head Limited, editing, designing and project-managing books, exhibition catalogues and corporate publications.
