Are you a care leaver?
Starting university is an exciting time, but sometimes daunting too. We encourage you to get in touch even before you apply, so we can offer offer advice and guidance as you transition into university life.

Pre-application

Our admissions team take the time to get to know each student individually. They offer Open Days as well as one-to-one conversations (in-person or online), and do their best to understand any worries from day one. Our admissions team will encourage you to also speak with our Head of Student Support even before applying, so that you know a few friendly faces and have had a chance to get to know the campus better.

At interview stage and upon assessing your application, your care leaver status is thoroughly taken into account. This is to help us consider and achieve the best outcome for you.
We know this can all sound overwhelming, so you also have an opportunity to go for a coffee – or another drink of your choosing – with Alisha (Head of Student Support) or Geraldine (our WP manager).

Finance

LIS offer a bursary of up to £2,000 a year to help support you. We also have a general hardship fund.
LIS can also offer one-to-one sessions to help support you when applying for student finance. If you’re worried about living costs, we can also look at helping you budget for the year and offer financial advice.

Accommodation

We don’t have our own accommodation. Instead, we have established agreements with some of London’s leading accommodation providers. This means that you can socialise and live alongside students from a diverse range of international and national backgrounds from other universities in London.
We can support you at LIS to explore which options would be best for you. Please find more info here.

Mental and physical health

We want to really encourage students to take the time to look after their health and wellbeing. Student life (and life in general) can become challenging for many reasons and can affect our physical and mental health, as well as our overall confidence. We strongly believe that university is a good time and place to practice important habits to help prioritise mental health.
We want to support students to build healthy lifestyles and feel more resilient. To do this at LIS, we offer:
  • Regular one-to-one meetings with the Head of Student Support.
  • Student support plans tailored to individual health, disabilities, and learning differences.
  • Weekly mindfulness and yoga group practices.
  • Access to individual weekly counselling sessions with specialists.
  • Individual workshops about stress and anxiety, sleep, low moods, building confidence and resilience, personal organisation, and time and money management.
  • Support drop-ins throughout the course

Career development

We’ll support you to build confidence and skills to reach your career goals, through one-to-ones with our Careers Manager, and through working closely with your academic coach and our Head of Student Support.
Please do get in touch for further information – or even just a chat.
