Dr Michael Englard - LIS - Registrar

Dr Michael Englard

Registrar

Michael is the Registrar at LIS and sits on the Board of Directors. In his role, Michael led the team in securing Degree Awarding Powers. This milestone ensured that LIS was the first Higher Education Institution to begin with the ability to award its own degrees for over fifty years. In 2022, the School achieved further powers to teach Master’s degrees.

In 2021, Michael set up the LIS Foundation – LIS’ sister charity – which supports students from low income, care experienced, and estranged backgrounds.

Prior to joining LIS, Michael co-founded Causeway Education where he is now a trustee. This charity runs programmes for students from less advantaged backgrounds and teachers from low progression schools.

Michael’s experience in Higher Education encompasses teaching, management and regulation. He received his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2013 where he worked as a Director of Studies. As a strong advocate of adult education, Michael has worked for over a decade as an associate lecturer at the Open University. In addition, Michael is a Committee Member of the Stephen Spender Trust and a fellow of Advance HE (previously the Higher Education Academy).

With a keen ongoing interest in teaching innovations, Michael leads elective modules. This includes “Telling the Story of a Wicked Problem” co-led with Zillah Watson – a leading authority in Augmented Reality and metaverse narratives.
