Dr Ebrahim Patel

Ebrahim is an applied mathematician who holds an MMath and PhD from the University of Manchester, both in Mathematics. He is especially interested in the mathematics of complex systems and human behaviour.

Ebrahim co-founded The Bees, an award-winning writing group which promotes the understanding and enjoyment of mathematical techniques.

Bringing together a range of ideas is something I've always tried to do in my own work so I'm very excited to help the students adopt this way of working at LIS.

Ebrahim graduated from the University of Manchester with an MMath in Mathematics. He remained at Manchester to carry out his PhD, where his thesis covered a range of topics including complex systems, graph theory, cellular automata, Boolean networks, and the modelling of asynchronous processes (particularly via Tropical Mathematics).

Ebrahim was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Reading in 2012, following this with two research stints at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Oxford, most recently in 2018.  He was also a lecturer in Applied Mathematics at the University of Portsmouth.

His research is varied and exciting, generally involving maths and data to better understand complex systems and human behaviour. Ebrahim undertook research of this nature at the Oxford-Emirates Data Science Lab, where he also developed real-world projects at Masters level and for the Industrially Focussed Mathematical Modelling PhD course.

Together with Andrew Irving, Ebrahim co-founded The Bees, an ambitious and award-winning writing group which aims to promote the understanding and enjoyment of mathematical techniques to the wider public.
